Balugo Baloney
Written by Fr. Tom Welu, MI

Easter greetings from Baloney Land!  Here souls were washed clean, penance was promoted and Holy Week was a time of solemnity and prayer.  Even the weather cooperated although it was warm.

Attendance was high at the blessing of palms, the Way of the Cross, and Easter Sunday.  Confessions after the Way of the Cross were heard for two and a half hours.

Had a very productive meeting with Fr. General and his two consultors at Makati.  I was unable, regretfully, to attend the general assembly and subsequent meeting in Quezon City because of a commitment to be at Balugo to celebrate Palm Sunday at our chapel.

Rode the MRT in Manila for the first time and was surprised to see some younger riders give up their seats to women and the elderly.  Even had two young guys offer me their seats.  Of course, I refused.  Guess they thought I was an old guy or maybe they respected my military hat from Desert Storm. I’m sure it was the latter.  How’s that for baloney?

Hey, the Philippines is #1 again.  The most corrupt country in Asia according to the latest poll.

I’m having a new addition to the Balugo Baloney.  Every month I will pose a question that my astute readers can mull over and meditate on.  Here’s the first one: Why are so many toilets without toilet seats?

Health Notes

Just had a big outbreak of typhus and typhoid fever here in the Philippines.  Hundreds of people, especially children, were hospitalized.  Of course the officials of that water district said the water was fine – not contaminated with human feces.  But a Dept. of Health test showed that the water was contaminated.

I wonder why action is taken only after there is a problem.  Prevention seems to be a lost art.

Until next month, Fr. Tom Welu, MI.
