Servant of God: Nicola D'Onofrio

Nicola D'OnofrioNicola D'Onofrio was born on March 24, 1943 in a small farmhouse in Villamagna (Italy).

His happy childhood went by unnoticed: school, first communion, time as altar server. Nothing distinguishes him from his peers. He was intelligent and diligent, maybe a bit too serious but not in any way extraordinary.

The wish to become a priest awakened in him early, perhaps influenced by a theology student from his hometown and by the proximity to the birthplace of St. Camillus in Bucchianico. He aspired to enter the Camillian seminary in Rome.

But his father opposed Nicola's wish; he wanted both of his sons to work with him in the farm. The mother accepted his son's vocation but preferred that he enter the diocesan seminary in nearby Chieti.

Nicola continued to attend school. At favorable moments, he explained to his parents what a blessing it would be for the family to have a son who was a priest.

Finally the parents relented. Nicola was allowed to enter the Camillian seminary in Rome. There he began his studies on October 3, 1955.

The young student buckled down to his studies to achieve academic success. Alongside, what remained most important for him was to find his vocation. He enthusiastically followed the guidance of his spiritual director. His friendliness and his smile made him well loved.

In loving prayer he turned to Jesus and Mary. Therese of Lisieux, the little Therese, became his favorite saint. He manifested a promising life in the Order.

In 1963, however, he was diagnosed of cancer. He underwent surgery which was followed by painful therapy. Nicola endured his sickness with patience and serenity grounded in prayer.

On May 28, 1964, the young religious, with the special permission of the Pope, took the vows ahead of time. In an admirable way, he endured his suffering, knowing that his life was soon to end. He prayed: "Jesus, give me strength! I am ready, come and take me to you. Dear Mother of God, you know how much I love you and Jesus!" He entrusted himself completely into the hands of God.

Nicola D'Onofrio's short life was marked by a heroic love for God. He accepted his destiny without complaint. He endured his illness and pains patiently as something divinely meant for him. On June 12, 1964 he died - a young man who can intercede for us before God.

Nicola, you Servant of God, help me to recognize that love of God and sacrifice are values which give meaning and future to my life.
