A holistic health program keeps going in Cainta
Written by Sch. Mushtaq Anjum, MI

Because he had no room to lay his head, Fr. Rolly “squatted”, illegally perhaps, for several years with chickens and other animals in his mission area in Cainta  – which shows his deep seated love for animals. That could perhaps qualify him to be some kind of a Camillian St. Francis of Assisi. [How’s that for Baloney? Well, we’ll know when Fr. Tom comes back after voting for Obama (hopefully?)].

Thus, Fr. Rolly is a squatter no more.  He has a decent shelter now.  He intended the shelter not only for himself but also for our Camillian seminarians and scholastics who go there for exposure and apostolate.

Fr. Rolly has initiated several programs for the good health of body, mind and soul of the people in Rosepack Compound and neighboring areas.  At the St. Camillus Health Center the people avail themselves of medical consultation and check-up daily and of dental consultation and treatment every Sunday. In the recent months, the number of patients has tripled.

A nutrition program was launched last November 16.  The program is meant for undernourished and malnourished children.  A screening process was used to select the children who will be included in the program. Children with primary complex were given priority.

For optimal effect, an education program for parents is also implemented alongside the feeding program.  The parents are asked to attend sessions where dieticians and pediatricians give inputs on proper hygiene, preparation of simple but nutritious meals, and the proper care of children.

In order to combat the culture of violence, death and immorality in society, Fr. Rolly also started showing Christian movies every Saturday evening. The objective of the film showing is to inculcate in the viewers the Christian values of love, compassion, mercy, forgiveness, etc. After the movie the viewers share their insights and ideas. (By the way, the show is for free. So seize the opportunity.)

Fr. Rolly shared that one of the great challenges that faces him in Cainta is how to sustain the health care program, clinic and community healthcare volunteers’ training program. To meet the challenge, he used his  enterprising skills to set up income generating projects in the area which sustain those programs.  One of these projects is the use of the Center as retreat and seminar venue.  Several groups such as Couples for Christ, Cursillo, etc. come and rent the place for their activities.  The earnings from this venture help keep the different ongoing programs truly going.
